Hemorrhoids - Bleeding during bowel movements, itching, and rectal pain are the most common symptoms of hemorrhoids. If you have any of these symptoms, consult your doctor, for these might also be symptoms of far more serious conditions. Hemorrhoids can be divided into two categories, internal and external, each having differing treatment. Although hemorrhoids do occur in everyone, they become large and cause problems only in about 4% of the general population. They are found equally in men and women. There are several theories about the cause, including inadequate intake of fiber, prolonged sitting on the toilet, and chronic straining to have a bowel movement. None of these theories has been proven. Personal experience indicates a strong relationship with stress: hemorrhoids often return when life stress is high or straining of bowels happens.
