Lexapro (Escitalopram) [prescription drug, generic not available]: Lexapro is an oral drug used for treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Chemically, lexapro is similar to paxil, zoloft, and prozac, all four being in the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs work by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, the chemical messengers that nerves use to communicate with one another. Lexapro (and the other SSRIs) work to prevent the reuptake of one neurotransmitter, serotonin, an action which results in more serotonin available to attach to receptors.
Side Effects of Lexapro: Many different side effects with the most common being (percentage of people with this side effect in brackets):
Headache (up to 24%);
Nausea (up to 18%);
Somnolence (up to 13%);
Ejaculation Disorder (up to 12%);
Insomnia (up to 12%);
Insomnia (up to 9%);
Fatigue (up to 8%).
Comparisons with Other Anti-Depressants: A recent study revealed that the three most commonly prescribed anti-depressants had about the same effectiveness. Drugs tested were paxil (paroxetine), prozac (fluoxetine) and zoloft (sertraline). This study followed depressed patients for nine months, well beyond the acute depressive phase. While similar tests do not yet seem available for two newer antidepressants, wellbutrin and lexapro, it is likely that they are also equally effective. For specific side effects of these others...
