Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Its Side Effects

Prozac (Fluoxetine) [prescription drug, generic available]: Prozac (like paxil, zoloft, etc.) affects neurotransmitters, the chemicals that nerves within the brain use to communicate with each other. Neurotransmitters are manufactured and released by nerves and then travel and attach to nearby nerves and can be thought of as the communication system of the brain. Serotonin is one such neurotransmitter. The serotonin either travels across the space between nerves and attaches to receptors on the surface of nearby nerves or it attaches to receptors on the surface of the nerve that produced it, to be taken up by the nerve and released again (a process referred to as re-uptake). Prozac works by preventing the reuptake of one neurotransmitter, serotonin, by nerve cells after it has been released. The reduced uptake of serotonin caused by fluoxetine (Prozac) causes increased brain levels of serotonin, which changes mood. Prozac is prescribed for treating depression, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Side Effects of Prozac: Many, many different side effects with the most common being (percentage of people with this side effect in brackets): nausea (up to 22%), insomnia (up to 19%), nervousness (up to 13%), anxiety (up to 12%), somnolence (up to 12%), diarrhea (up to 11%), anorexia (up to 10%).

Comparisons with Other Anti-Depressants: A recent study indicated that the three most commonly prescribed anti-depressants had about the same effectiveness. Drugs tested were paxil (paroxetine), prozac (fluoxetine) and zoloft (sertrraline). This study followed 573 primary care depressed patients for nine months, well beyond the acute phase of depression. The patients were randomized to one of the three drugs. While similar tests do not yet seem available for two newer antidepressants, wellbutrin and lexapro, it is likely that they are also equally effective. For specific side effects of these others... Paxil Side Effects   Zoloft Side Effects   Wellbutrin Side Effects   Lexapro Side Effects. The above study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dec 19, 2001. FURTHER NOTE: some evidence suggests that drugs like Prozac can cause unwanted sexual changes in desire, performance and satisfaction.

Daily Scripture

Psalms 5:11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

Psalms 5:12 For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

Excerpt from the book Finding Your Soul in the Spirituality Maze:   "Folks have found several ways to avoid the teachings of Katie, while pretending to be on that path. The most common is: "I only accept that situations that don't apply to me are able to be loved. My difficult situations and angst are not the same; it is totally appropriate for me to be critical and judgmental about current wars, sitting presidents, big polluters or big business." Justifying criticism and pain (because it is "natural") does lead some people away from Katie's work, while they may still believe that they are following it."   Continued here - free read.
