Storage of foods is important for all of us. These archived cooking/food tips emphasize ways to maintain flavors, improve the quality of storage or to maintain freshness of the food products, organic or not.

To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

After you've rinsed your lettuce wrap a paper towel around the end and store in a plastic bag. It seems to keep fresh longer.

Be gentle with sweet onions. They can bruise more easily than a sturdier yellow onion.

Because the refrigerator is humid, storing herbs and spices there is not OK. To keep larger quantities of spices fresh, store them in the freezer in tightly sealed containers.

Store freshly cut basil on your counter in a glass of water so that the water covers the stems and not the leaves. It will keep for weeks and even might grow some roots.

To keep bean sprouts fresh in your refrigerator store them in water in a covered plastic container.

To make mushrooms last longer, store them in a brown paper bag in your crisper drawer.
