Evaluating Spiritual Teaching

Excerpt from Chapter 14 - Evaluating Spiritual Disciplines

A bit of New Age Humor Bumper Stickers... Time is the best teacher; unfortunately, it kills all its students. As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in public schools.

Evaluations and Rankings May Be Unpopular. A reader of a preliminary copy of this book was appalled that I had the gall to question and rank "advanced" spiritual teachers, because I was obviously neither enlightened nor a recognized advanced spiritual teacher myself. It is my opinion that this early reader missed and is still missing a healthy skepticism, often "oohing" and "aahing" over whatever teaching is "supposed to be most spiritual."

My evaluations are not based upon anything esoteric, but on my decades of life experiences of both psychological and spiritual growth. For some people, my opinions and evaluations will cause offense, which is unintended but seems necessary, given my purpose. My purpose is to allow readers to understand the reasoning behind my evaluations, thus gaining the ability to make more effective spiritual choices/evaluations for themselves.

Excerpt from Be Your Own Therapist: "We have all heard the debate about which aspects of our beings are caused by genes and which are caused by upbringing. What one never hears in this debate is the possibility that there might be a third alternative, what I am referring to is a lifeplan."
